How to Play

Rope Quoits is a traditional, social precision game enjoyed by players of all ages. The aim is simple: throw rope quoits onto a steel peg without missing. While easy to learn, the game rewards consistency, focus, and technique.

SETUP

  • The throwing distance is 9 feet (2.74 metres), measured from the centre of the peg to the toe line.
  • The playing surface should be reasonably level.
  • The peg block must be 3 inches (7.62 cm) high, with the steel peg extending 11 inches (27.95 cm) above the block.
  • The steel peg must be fixed, tapered, and positioned securely.
  • The toe line is marked by a wooden toe board measuring 3 feet (0.914 m) long and 2 inches (5.08 cm) thick, fastened to the floor or part of an approved portable setup.
  • The peg must be positioned:
    • At least 2 feet (0.62 m) clear of any wall
    • With 3 feet (0.914 m) of clear space on each side and behind the player
  • A backdrop screen measuring 2 ft 6 in x 2 ft 6 in (0.762 m square) must be installed 14 inches (35.5 cm) behind the peg.
  • Rubber matting should cover the floor area from the screen to well behind the toe board for safety.
  • A suspension light and shade must be positioned above the peg:
    • The bottom of the shade must be 2–2 ft 6 in (0.61–0.762 m) above the peg
    • The light bulb must be at least 150 watts

RULES

  • Each player throws six quoits, one at a time, directly at the peg.
  • After the initial six throws, a player may continue throwing until they miss or reach their limit, whichever occurs first.
  • Once a player takes their stance at the toe board, they must not approach the peg until their throw is complete.
  • Players must not move more than 5 feet (1.52 m) backwards from the toe board during a throw.
  • If a quoit lands on the peg and then falls off, it does not count.
  • A quoit hanging on the peg may be re-thrown or removed at the player’s discretion.
  • All quoits must be thrown directly at the peg.
  • After completing a turn, remaining quoits must be placed either at the toe board or on the peg.
