About MRQA

Welcome

The Melbourne Rope Quoits Association (M.R.Q.A.) invites you to start playing Rope Quoits. Rope Quoits is a low-cost, social and competitive game that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Whether you are looking for a relaxed social activity or a competitive sport to develop skill and consistency, Rope Quoits offers a welcoming environment for players of all ages and abilities. New players are always encouraged to come along, learn the game, and get involved in our community.

Did you know?

Records tell us that Rope Quoits was played extensively throughout Britain as early as the 15th century and was introduced to Australia by early settlers at many mining centres. The sport continued to grow across different regions, forming associations that competed socially and competitively. Rope Quoits remains an inclusive sport today, with players ranging widely in age and experience.

The Australian Rope Quoits Council

The Australian Rope Quoits Council was formed in 1947 as the controlling body, established to standardise equipment and support the organisation of competitions. Rope Quoits Associations throughout Victoria compete in Singles and Teams Championships under Council direction and shared rules. The MRQA is affiliated with the Australian Rope Quoits Council and continues to support the ongoing growth and promotion of the sport across Melbourne and surrounding areas.

World Record

A notable moment in Rope Quoits history was achieved by Bill Irby of Melbourne, who set a world record throw of 4002 unfinished in 1967. Bill Irby passed away in January 1983 and remains one of the sport’s most celebrated champions, having won the Australian Open Singles Championships six times between 1967 and 1982.
